| All
the world is a stage
Harwood's Garderobier is one of the most translated
and performed English dramatic texts of recent decades.
It is a tale about actors and the world of theater,
which the author knew intimately from his original
occupation as an actor. For five years he also worked
as costumer for Sir Donald Wolfit, the last of the
great actors-directors that have dominated English
theater since the 17th century with their theatrical
companies. Sir, (Martin Huba in a guest performance),
the play's main protagonist, the actor-director of
the touring troupe, dictates his surroundings as an
absolute monarch in whose shadow all others fade.
There are some dissenters, but Norman (Miroslav Táborský),
the costumer, sees serving Sir as his life mission.
But all of the members of the small ensemble are aware
that Sir is on his last legs.

| An
operatic pastiche
For its end-of-the-year performance, the National
Theater (ND) opera has prepared the premiere of Bertram
and Mescalinda, an original Czech opera by the composer
Jan Klusák (1934). The opera's various subtitles are
"Punished Fidelity", or "Einstein's
Enchanted Violin", or "Krakonoš's Gift".
The author designated it as an "opera-pasticcio",
which means confusion, jumble, or patchwork. This
work is actually a blend of the various artistic motifs
that the author continues to develop and inter-weave.
This new one-act opera will be performed in the ND
along with an older work by Klusák - Report for Academia,
which he composed in 1994, following a story of the
same name by Franz Kafka.

Maturity of movement
Following the outstanding success of Arcimboldo 2000, the Nederlands
Dans Theater III is returning to Prague to display its unique dance
art. The ensemble was established in 1991 by a group of experienced
dancers, all of whom have already reached forty years of age. Their
priority is artistic and human maturity, and the performers make
use of their extensive theatrical experience and creative abilities.
Their finest performances include modern and classical dance, song,
pantomime, and dramatic and comic effects. The choreography arises
sensitively from the abilities of the individual dancers, resulting
in masterful works filled with sophisticated, humorous nuances.
The Prague performance will present the works of Jiří Kylián - a
renowned leader in the world of choreography and long-time artistic
director NDT III, who has received many prestigious international
awards.
Nederlands Dans Theater III,
Divadlo na Vinohradech, November 22 and 23, from 19:30, tickets
200-800 Kč.
Photography of the heart
The Prague National Gallery is presenting an extensive retrospective
exhibition of the works of the internationally known photographer
Josef Koudelka (1938), a native of Boskovice who spent most of his
creative life in France as an emigré. The exhibition covers all
aspects of Koudelka's creations - from early photos from the end
of the 1950s to the present. His pictures are more than documentary;
it is difficult to confine them to a certain genre. They express
free movement and focus on the search for the meaning of human existence.
Since 1971 this leading artist in the field of humanistic photography
has been a member of the prestigious photographic agency Magnum
Photos. In 1991 he won the French Henri Cartier-Bresson prize, and
a year later the Swedish Hasselblad Foundation award. In the same
year the French ministry of culture named him a Knight of the Order
of Arts and Letters (Chevalier de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres).
Josef Koudelka - Fotografie,
Národní galerie - Veletržní palác, from Nov. 15 2002 to Feb. 23
2003, daily except Mondays 10:00-18:00, entrance 60 Kč.
