philosophical maze
A dramatization of The Labyrinth, a famous work by
Czech philosopher and educator J. A. Komenský follows
the childishly naive Pilgrim and his guides, Všudybud,
Všezvěd, and Mámení (Omnipresent, Omniscient, and
Delusive), on a trek through the post-modern labyrinth
of the world towards the paradise of the heart. Members
of the international Divadlo Miloco ensemble, in a
co-production with the Prague Chamber Theater, transpose
Komenský's philosophical questions to a contemporary
context. Eight actors from six countries around the
world will perform in the artistic concept of the
renowned Czech sculptor Jiří Plieštik and costume
artist Eva Petríková.

| Movement
& madness
As the name suggests, the most recent performance
by Lenka Ottová and the DOMINO Dance Company, "Bending
Over Backwards", deals with abnormality, obsession,
madness, sex, minor deviations, and other strange
things. The DOMINO Dance Company, established in Prague
in 1996, is characterized by the great technical skills
of the dancers and their creativity, which is part
and parcel of the ensemble's repertoire. In 1999 this
ensemble was selected to represent the Czech Republic
on a tour of the European Cities of Culture 2000 -
Trans Danse Europe 2000. The ensemble's artistic director
and choreographer is Lenka Ottová, who graduated this
year from the Department of Music at the Academy of
Performing Arts, specializing in choreography.

Chinese tea party
The "Year of the Horse" is coming to an end, and the
"Year of the Sheep" begins on February 1. A traditional
Chinese celebration - a concert that will also feature rare Chinese
teas, wines, and other delicacies - will be held in the unusual
environment of the Ponec Theater. This musical celebration should
lead people to think about what the coming of the new year (according
to the lunar calendar) will bring or take away. A perfomance by
the Chinese singer Feng-Jün Song and the musicians Martin Smolka,
Helena and Jiří Vedral will bring visitors an entirely new program
of folk and ethnic songs, this time from Kazakhstan, Indonesia,
and central Asia.

The art scene next door
The goal of the "Split Points" exhibition is to introduce
the rather unknown but dynamically developing contemporary Dresden
art scene to the Czech public. The show will feature eleven artists
whose works reflect the predominant traits of the Dresden art environment.
These traits include a tendency to neoconceptualism, linkage of
the structure of visual works with architectural principles, and
the often formal interconnections of content, artifacts and territories
outside of the world of art. An important element of the exhibition
is the notion of movement among individual parts of the whole, between
center and margin, between object and viewer, and finally between
the Czech and the Saxon (or German) art scenes.
